[8:00am] Hazardous Waste Collection
- Description:
- Manchester is the home of a regional center for household hazardous waste collection. This center, built with grant funding from the Department of Environmental Protection, is operated by the Capitol Region East Operating Committee (CREOC) adjacent to the Manchester Landfill on Olcott Street. Residents of Glastonbury, Hebron, Marlborough, Somers, Stafford, and Vernon are also able to use the Center.
TIME: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Olcott Street, Manchester (Exit 1 from 384, follow Spencer Street for 0.9 miles. Turn left on Olcott Street. Follow signs to Facility.) The Household Hazardous Waste Center is located adjacent to the Town Landfill.
Bring a DRIVER’S LICENSE, TAX BILL OR CAR REGISTRATION to prove residency. This is your opportunity to safely dispose of oil and lead based paints, stains, acids, automotive fluids, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, chemicals, household cleaning products, and other hazardous materials which may have accumulated at your home, in your basement, or garage. PLEASE LEAVE ALL MATERIALS IN ORIGINAL CONTAINERS.
DO NOT BRING latex paint, waste oil, or antifreeze. These are NOT hazardous waste. They can be brought to the Landfill for recycling.
MERCURY THERMOMETER EXCHANGE At each collection mercury medical thermometers will be collected and exchanged for non-mercury digital units (while supplies last). HELP KEEP MERCURY OUT OF OUR ENVIRONMENT AND EXCHANGE YOUR MERCURY THERMOMETER!

[9:00am] Baby Boomers and Beyond Hiking Club - Step Up To Health
- Description:
- The Manchester Recreation Department is sponsoring a Baby Boomer Hiking Club.
Join our six week hiking club and Step Up To Health, meet new friends, get some fresh air and exercise and experience the beautiful trails located right in your own backyard. We will hike a variety of trails located in the Manchester/Vernon/Bolton area. Geared for beginners, but everyone is welcome. All hikes will be one hour long start to finish. Hikes will be conducted on Saturdays beginning October 3 and concluding November 7 from 9:00 - 10:15 a.m. Fee is $24.00 for residents and $30.00 for non-
residents.
Registration is ongoing at the Center Springs Recreation Department Office, Community “Y” Recreation Center, Mahoney Recreation Center and Town Hall Customer Service Center.

- The Manchester Historical Society is holding a Book and Tag Sale on Friday, October 16, from 9 to 6; Saturday, October 17, from 9 to 4 at the History Center, 175 Pine Street, corner of Forest St. PREVIEW with $5 admission fee on Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. Free admission on Friday and Saturday.
Tag Sale items are needed. Donors may bring donations of good saleable items Monday through Friday from 9 to noon, and Saturdays or other times by appointment by calling Tag Sale manager Terry Parla at 860-643-1823, now through October 12, except holidays. We are seeking books, small furniture, household goods, china, sports items, children’s toys, games, and items both useful and decorative. We also need donations of sturdy card tables and other folding tables for ongoing use at events and meetings. No clothing or computer equipment, please. And remember to come and shop at the sale. - The Registrar's of Voters Office will be open for
voter registration sessions on Saturday 10/17/09 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m and on Tuesday 10/27/09 from 8 a.m - 8 p.m.
Tuesday, October 27th is the last day to register to be able to vote in the Municipal Election, this must be done in person at the Registrars Office, by 8:00 p.m.
