Description:
St. Maryís Contra Dance to Benefit MACC Charities. On Saturday, April 7th at 7 p.m., St. Mary's Episcopal Church at 41 Church Street in Manchester is hosting a contra dance to benefit MACC Charities. Contra dancing, a cousin of English country dance and American square dance, is a traditional American social dance that dates back to the 1700s. The dances donít require any fancy footwork and are fun and easy to learn. There will be a beginnersí workshop at 7 p.m. before the start of the actual dance at 7:30 p.m., and the caller will teach all the steps needed for the dances. You can come alone or with your friends. The dancing can be energetic so wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. The music at contra dances is performed live and consists mainly of Irish, New England and Quebecois jigs and reels. The music for this dance will be performed by the energetic and exuberant traditional acoustic group Wild Notes, and the dance will be called by Jim Gregory. General admission is $12 and light refreshments will be available. All proceeds from the evening will benefit MACC Charities. For more information about the dance, please call St. Maryís at 860-649-4583 or visit www.stmarysct.org.
