Cheney Hall will be the location of a dual-purpose concert – first to celebrate in song with former State Troubadours Lara Herscovitch and Hugh Blumenfeld and fellow singer and composer David Sutherland; and to hear from the nominees of Manchester’s own Troubadour search.
Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. the Manchester Arts Commission will sponsor this event, which is open to the public and will give Manchester residents the chance to vote on who will be the first Troubadour for the Town of Manchester.
The concert will be in two sets. The first part will feature the nominees and at intermission, voting will take place. The second set will feature Herscovitch, Blumenfeld and Sutherland, the winner will be announced and that person will close up the show.
Lara Herscovitch was the State Troubadour from 2009 to 2010, is a charismatic singer and songwriter with folk, jazz, blues and pop influences. She has worked in the U.S., Latin America and Asia on behalf of disadvantaged individuals focusing on education, community development and the environment. Hugh Blumenfeld has been writing and performing for 30 years and moved to Connecticut 25 years and became the State Troubadour in 1999. The healing power of his music led him to go back to school to become a doctor and he now practices and teaches family medicine in Hartford. David Sutherland has been performing in Connecticut coffeehouses and clubs for years and sings his own serious and humorous songs. He has worked for the Nature Conservancy for over 20 years and was in a previous Cheney Hall competition of other folk singers to open for a Tom Rush show in 2009.
The Manchester Arts Commission created the search for a Town Troubadour to add to the growing arts and culture environment of the Town and to appoint a person who would hold this two-year term and perform their music at Town events in celebration of the arts.
Admission to the event is a suggested donation of $10. Refreshments will be sold during the evening to benefit Little Theatre of Manchester, whose home is at Cheney Hall. Cheney Hall is located at 177 Hartford Road, Manchester, CT. For more information, call 860-647-9824.

LTM Lunchtime Lecture– Wednesday, May 15, noon
You Can’t Take it with You! – third production of LTM’s season of Great American Plays!
Our Lecture series coordinator, David Garnes, will lead us in a lively discussion of this crazy, turn-your-life-upside-down comedy by Moss Hart and George Kaufman. This production, by the same writers of our 2010 production of The Man Who Came to Dinner, is a classic comedy with wacky characters, off the wall circumstances, and a great springboard for conversation.
Garnes is both a published writer and a theater aficionado and a member of Little Theatre of Manchester. Several cast members are expected to join in on the conversation. The show opens on June 7th for three weekends at Cheney Hall. Tickets to the show will be available for purchase, discounts are available for students and seniors and we also accept the Let’s Go Card from the Greater Hartford Arts Council and Entertainment Book coupons. Students can also take advantage of final weekend general seats for just $10!
Patrons are encouraged to bring their lunch, we’ll put on the coffee! This is a free event, donations accepted at the door. Cheney Hall is located in the Cheney Historic Landmark District, at 177 Hartford Road, Manchester, CT. For information call: 860-647-9824.

Walking Home Through the Cheney Mills Book Talk:
The Manchester Historical Society hosts author and Manchester native Jennifer Malone Healy on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the History Center, 175 Pine St..
She will talk about her illustrated book Walking Home Through the Cheney Mills, which is "a poem told from my perspective as a second grader in 1962.
It is a combination of what I actually experienced and what fascinated me about the Cheney Mill history.
In visiting Manchester on a regular basis since moving away in 1987, and in particular returning every year for the Manchester Thanksgiving Day Road Race, the memories of walking home through the mills for the eight years I attended St. James School were vivid and comforting to me.
Books will be available for sale and signing. This is a free event, but donations are welcome. Visit www.manchesterhistory.org for more information about our events and the history of Manchester.

A Chorus of Peace
On Sunday, May 19th, at 4 p.m., the Richard J. McElraevy Memorial Concert Series is presenting a performance of A Chorus of Peace by CitySingers of Hartford at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester.
This performance will bring together music, visual art and dance in a unique statement for peace. The 15th c. chanson L’homme Armé(The Armed Man), in both a medieval setting by Antoine Busnois and a contemporary setting by Karl Jenkins, and various settings of Dona nobis pacem, or Give us peace, set images of armed defense against images of peace.
Other poetic texts in settings by Guilio Caccini , Randall Stroope, Hildegard von Bingen, Morten Lauridsen and Jan Sibelius are
inspired by a hope for peace. Augmenting the choral and instrumental music will be the African choreography of Sankofa Kuumba Dance Ensemble, wearing the International Peace Belt which is made up of coins and gemstones from 165 countries and created by Artists for World Peace, a non-profit organization whose mission is to spread peace by supporting humanitarian projects in places where The Peace Belt travels.
Together, they offer these performances as a symbol of peace for all. The concert is free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact St. Mary’s at (860) 649-4583 or visit www.stmarysct.org.

Never one to shy away from expressing his opinions, Chris Powell, Managing Editor of the JI, appears on Manchester Review in May to discuss a host of issues.
Powell talks about voter apathy, the achievement gap, drug legalization, mental illness and the liquor lobby- all in a quick thirty minutes!
Agree with him or not, Powell makes some cogent arguments. Chris Powell, Reflections on Contemporary Issues with host Jack Peak can be seen on Manchester Review, Monday nights at 9 PM in May on channel 15, Cox PATV. It can also be seen in two parts on You Tube at any time.
