Walking Home Through the Cheney Mills Book Talk:

The Manchester Historical Society hosts author and Manchester native Jennifer Malone Healy on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the History Center, 175 Pine St..

She will talk about her illustrated book Walking Home Through the Cheney Mills, which is "a poem told from my perspective as a second grader in 1962.

It is a combination of what I actually experienced and what fascinated me about the Cheney Mill history.

In visiting Manchester on a regular basis since moving away in 1987, and in particular returning every year for the Manchester Thanksgiving Day Road Race, the memories of walking home through the mills for the eight years I attended St. James School were vivid and comforting to me.

Books will be available for sale and signing. This is a free event, but donations are welcome. Visit www.manchesterhistory.org for more information about our events and the history of Manchester.

A Chorus of Peace

On Sunday, May 19th, at 4 p.m., the Richard J. McElraevy Memorial Concert Series is presenting a performance of A Chorus of Peace by CitySingers of Hartford at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester.

This performance will bring together music, visual art and dance in a unique statement for peace. The 15th c. chanson L’homme Armé(The Armed Man), in both a medieval setting by Antoine Busnois and a contemporary setting by Karl Jenkins, and various settings of Dona nobis pacem, or Give us peace, set images of armed defense against images of peace.

Other poetic texts in settings by Guilio Caccini , Randall Stroope, Hildegard von Bingen, Morten Lauridsen and Jan Sibelius are
inspired by a hope for peace. Augmenting the choral and instrumental music will be the African choreography of Sankofa Kuumba Dance Ensemble, wearing the International Peace Belt which is made up of coins and gemstones from 165 countries and created by Artists for World Peace, a non-profit organization whose mission is to spread peace by supporting humanitarian projects in places where The Peace Belt travels.

Together, they offer these performances as a symbol of peace for all. The concert is free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact St. Mary’s at (860) 649-4583 or visit www.stmarysct.org.
