12:00pm [12:00pm] Manchester and the Underground Railroad
The Manchester Historical Society will open the Cheney Homestead at 106 Hartford Rd. on Sunday, February 19 from noon to 4:00 p.m. Children and adults are invited to this open house to learn about Manchester's role in the Underground Railroad, try food from the trail cooked over an outside fire, hear stories, and share games to experience a little of what slaves escaping to the North encountered during the tumultuous period before the Civil War and emancipation. Visit the house, built in 1785 and lived in by many generations of the Cheney family, who donated the Homestead to the Manchester Historical Society in 1968 for use as a house museum. We plan Open Houses on the third Sunday of the month. Donations welcomed for the upkeep of the Homestead. For old photos, history and additional info: www.manchesterhistory.org
