10:00am [10:00am] Manchester Historical Society Celebrates Black History Month
The Manchester Historical Society presents a Black History Month exhibit weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through March 23. Saturday February 24 and Sunday February 25 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exhibit describes the six African American soldiers from Manchester who enlisted in the 29th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. There is information on each man with the dates of his military service, the battles in which he fought, and his life after the Civil War. The exhibit is also open on subsequent weekends by appointment; phone 860-647-9983 weekdays to make an appointment. The museum store will be open during exhibit hours for local history books, maps, notecards, t-shirts, coffee mugs, and Herald cookbooks. The Cheney silk advertisement exhibit is also on display.

[12:40pm] A Matter of Balance/Managing Concerns about Falls
CLASSES ARE FULL A Matter of Balance/Managing Concerns about Falls is a workshop designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older participants. Participants learn to set realistic goals, to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. The Manchester Health Dept, is offering (2) Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls workshops. On February 16, 2018 from 12:45 5o 2:45 this 8 week program starts at Orford Village located at 370 West Center Street. On February 26, 2018 from 12:45 to 2:45 this 8 week program starts at the Manchester Senior Center located at 549 East Middle Turnpike. A workbook and healthy refreshments are provided. Book Discussion for Adults at Manchester Public Library, Monday, February 26, 2018 at 7:00pm. Join the discussion of "Underground Airlines" by Ben H. Winters. A work of alternative history the novel describes a modern America but one where the Civil War never occurred. Winters gives "a gripping plot [and] clear-eyed social commentary... in a wickedly imaginative thriller" (book jacket). The meeting will take place in the Howroyd Room at the Mary Cheney Library, 586 Main St., Manchester, CT 06040. The FREE program is open to the public and registration is not required.
